Norton in Bloom

The town council has launched Norton in Bloom (NiB) with the aim of creating new standout floral displays and improving existing neglected areas of the town.

One of the first projects has been the placing of several large planters along Commercial Street.

Norton mayor Councillor Antony Croser said: “The planters, funded by Malton and Norton Rotary Club and built by town councillor, John Howard, are in position in Commercial Street and at the Mill Street and Beverley Road junction, and this has already resulted in a local business offering to provide plants for them.”

Cllr Croser said the town council already funds hanging baskets along Church Street and Commercial Street, and contributes to the barrier baskets on both County Bridge and Railway Street bridge.

“It has also carried out improvement works in the riverside picnic area where the wooden seats and planters have been re-painted and additional paving put in around them,” he said.

“The NiB initiative will build on this with work with plans being drawn up to work with businesses and organisations to revitalise the commercial centre of the town with the provision of barrier baskets, planters, pots and window boxes.”

To help fund the project, members of Norton Town Council have increased the NiB budget from £4,000 to £6,000 for the year 2020/21.

Cllr Croser said NiB will be looking to involve the community with planting up the entrances to the town and public open spaces across the community.

“Volunteers have already tidied up the Scarborough Road entrance to Westfield Way and planted the verges with daffodil bulbs,” he said.

“This compliments the other areas across the town where there are striking displays of daffodils.

“The provision of an attractive, positive and healthy environment will boost the well-being of the town’s residents and visitors, and help businesses to be more successful.”

Yorkshire in Bloom (YiB) is a charity and regional body representing the Britain in Bloom campaign that is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
